Zamna is a multi-day long “festival” spread across different days and different venues in Tulum, Mexico. It is similar to Miami Music Week, with the events being spread across town and made up of smaller day parties, usually hosted by different record labels. Zamna started on December 28th and wrapped up on January 8th with Tale of Us Presents Afterlife. Besides the Zamna events, there were many other events and mini-festivals going on in Tulum at the same time so it lead to a crazy, music-packed week.

Zamna Events

All the Zamna events either took place at Mía Beach, a restaurant on Tulum Beach or at the official Zamna venue, located about 10 minutes more inland from Tulum Town. Mía Beach was the host for all the day parties, with a stage located on the beach while Zamna was the host for all the night parties. The week started off with a night event at Zamna on December 28th with a Bob Moses club set headliner. The next party was xxWinterBeach 1.0 for New Year’s Eve with Paul Kalkbrenner and Agents of Time. January 1st saw only an ARTBAT day party at Mía Beach. January 2nd was the second installation of xxWinterBeach, this time with Guy Gerber, Damian Lazarus and Diplo. January 3rd was another day party, this time hosted by Miami’s own Do Not Sit on the Furniture. January 4th saw the best party of the whole event: Renaissance. This one was more of a mini festival with multiple stages and next level production. Adam Beyer b2b Ida Engberg, Charlotte de Witte, and Nicole Moudaber b2b Danny Tenaglia are just some of the sets we saw at this event. January 5th was a Flying Circus label day party with Audiofly and Andhim. January 6th and 7th saw chill evenings with Blond:ish/Black Coffee and WhoMadeWho, respectively. January 8th closed off the event with another mini festival: Afterlife. Tale Of Us, Adriatique, Mind Against, Keinemusik, Denis Horvat and more threw down for the final event of the whole Zamna week.

The Venues

There were two main venues for all the Zamna parties – Mía Beach for the day and Zamna for the night. Mía Beach was a smaller venue directly on the beach. There was one stage on the sand, a little bar area behind it, a raised VIP area to the side, and access to the actual ocean, along with beach chairs to lay on, and the restaurant inside the building. It was a great chilled out venue, perfect for day parties after staying up all night the night before. You could lay on the beach or in one of the beach chairs and still hear the music perfectly. A lot of the time I would just lay down and relax and hear beautiful progressive techno like ARTBAT in the background. These events usually went from around 2-3 PM to 8 PM, so you could get some sun, watch the sunset and see a little bit of music after the sun went down. This was a great venue if you were staying in the Tulum Beach area, however it was quite far away from Tulum town.

The night party venue, just called Zamna, wasn’t another venue that they took over and used for Zamna but actually a specifically created venue for Zamna. This venue was more in the jungle, about 10-15 minute drive more inland from Tulum town. Some nights it had one stage while others it had two, depending on the size of the party. Every single event had a different stage setup so they must have taken down and rebuilt a new stage every single day for the next party. Besides the two stages, there was a large area with clothing and jewelry vendors, as well as a food truck courtyard serving up delicious food, including lots of vegan and vegetarian options. The venue was spread across a big area and included a cenote inside. You couldn’t swim in this cenote but it definitely gave a vibe when you had to walk over a bridge across a cenote to get to a stage. The night parties usually wrapped up right after sunrise, between 7 AM to 10 AM depending on the artist. This led to a pretty insane week with people staying up until 10 AM 8 nights, or more, in a row.

Honestly, I was legitimately impressed with the sound quality, the light and stage production, and the overall implementation of Zamna Tulum. I thought all of the parties were well executed, the lineups were insane, the crowds were very fun to be around. There was a little bit of rampant drug use and also “drug dealers” galore, but it is Mexico so you have to take that with a grain of salt.

Logistics

Logistically, being in Tulum during New Year’s and January in general is a nightmare. The whole town is packed to the gills with tourists, festival attendees and locals. Honestly, it is too much and it feels like the town might explode. One of the nights multiple restaurants had flat out run out of food. Also, Tulum is spread out into two main parts (Tulum beach and Tulum town) that are not easily accessible to each other. It is a 2-3 hour walk apart or a 15 minute car ride with no traffic. Add January traffic and even driving can take 45 minutes. If you have your own car or moped, this can make it slightly easier but there is also almost no parking so it still makes it hard to drive. If you take a taxi, it can cost upwards of 1,000 pesos each way ($50 USD). There were a few nights where the traffic was so bad and taxis were still saying they cost 1,000 pesos so I just hoofed it back into town – in platform sandals on the worst potholed roads imaginable with no street lights.

If you were staying in Tulum beach then it made it easier to reach Mía but harder to get to Zamna. No matter where you stayed, you were going to spend a lot of money on taxis getting to and from multiple events each day. As I was by myself, I thankfully talked my way into rides with other groups of people to make it much cheaper. If I had to pay for a taxi by myself every time I would have spent all my life savings! It is also possible to rent a bicycle or moped in Tulum, but the whole two weeks I was there every single rental place was totally booked up and had nothing to rent.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, I thought Zamna was an epic event through and through! The only downside for me was being in Tulum during that time. Because of New Year’s, the festivals, and just it being January, Tulum was crowded to the max. This really detracted from the time that I had because of the super raised price of taxis and accommodation, restaurants running out of food, rental places running out of cars/bikes/mopeds, all the attractions around being so crowded you couldn’t enjoy them, etc. Besides Tulum being much too overcrowded, the Zamna events didn’t feel super overcrowded. The vibes were surprisingly chill, I met so many amazing human beings, the sets and lineups were out of this world good, the sound/light/stage production was much better than I expected, and the venues were super well done! I would definitely recommend Zamna, but only if you make arrangements for cars and accommodations really far in advance.

Kickstarting the New Year With OMFG! NYE https://festivals.digitalsnazz.com/kickstarting-the-new-year-with-omfg-nye/ https://festivals.digitalsnazz.com/kickstarting-the-new-year-with-omfg-nye/#respond Fri, 10 Jan 2020 21:09:00 +0000 https://festivalcoast.com/kickstarting-the-new-year-with-omfg-nye/ Photo by Felicia Garcia (IG: @fixationphotography) | Written by Mark Apuzzo

2020 is here, brimming with hopes and expectations of what the future has to bring. However, before we get ready to look ahead: how about one more look back at the last hours of the year? For many of us who found ourselves in San Diego for New Year’s Eve, OMFG NYE gave us a proper send off into a new decade. LED Presents set up a massive rager at the Pechanga Arena for us for 2 nights, and it’s my pleasure to tell you about it.

OMFG DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS

The first night did not go as planned exactly. Anna Lunoe, who was supposed to be playing this night, came down with a serious ear infection. Due to her pregnancy she couldn’t take anything to rapidly help it so she had to cancel her performance. With that being the only thing that went wrong, everything else went oh so right.

Starting off with: Olmos & Sarisuk

Kicking off OMFG! NYE was none other than Olmos. He had a solid set of remixes with a few originals interspersed. Unfortunately for him doors opening and starting time were extremely close to each other so the crowd was still only starting to arrive really by the time Sarisuk took the stage after him. Sarisuk’s set may have been short but his beats were heating up the place. He would set us up with some pleasant pop-house hooks and then knock us down with bass drops that got the blood and the fists pumping, and he was only getting the Bass party started.

Drezo & Madeon

Drezo was next, taking us down a weird rabbit hole of Bass that we would be falling down all night long. His set really shifted us out of your typical house music into his darker, underground style of house. While his set was great, it was a more or less typical Drezo set with some of his biggest hits and some well-selected remixes throughout. Then, Madeon was on shortly after. Despite being one of the typically “softer” OMFG artists with his distinctive electrohouse, synth-pop sound; Madeon still had the arena shaking. We got to hear crowd favorites like “Shelter” and “All My Friends.” With the drops right after, however; he made you wonder if this was the same Madeon that made the original tracks. It felt like he was really throwing down harder than he normally does, a much more bass-heavy set than I expected. Whatever the reasons, it was an epic set that had the pit filled and everyone dancing.

Rezz & Peekaboo

Rezz took the stage next at midnight. True to Rezz fashion, it was one of, if not the, most original sets of the festival between both nights. I think that’s always been one of her biggest drawing features. In a sea of remixes and mash-ups, it’s such a refreshing experience hearing an artist play only their own music. Her unique style of dark, spacey Bass music had the crowd entranced between headbangs. She also dropped a new ID she’s been working on with Zedd. I could definitely hear Rezz’s bass mixed with Zedd’s beats for what’s sure to be a new staple of her club style mixes. Going on right after such a strong act can be tough, but that didn’t daunt Peekaboo from playing the nastiest, heaviest set off the night. He may be fairly new to the scene, but he has shown that he can run with the best. He was the only DJ on the first night to really provoke any mosh pits which was indicative of the style of music he was playing. Peekaboo took us past Bass music into the deep dark world of Riddim and Dubstep, even going so far as to call forth the legendary wall-of-death for his final song. He debuted a new ID that he has been working on with a local San Diego producer that had a real fast, club-style sound to it. So be on the look out for that new track.

Slander & Space Jesus

Power duo Slander brought us back with their heart-moving but bass strong tracks like “Superhuman” and “Gud Vibrations.” The whole place was lit up with positive vibes, beautiful visuals, and deep drops. The crowd ate it up as they played their perfectly curated mix of throwback, classic hits with their own modern-day bangers. While we didn’t get anything brand new from them, we did get a bomb mix of their recent release “First Time” with Seven Lions and Dabin. The last set of Day 1 was Space Jesus, another artist who prides himself in his very unique style of music. Much like our space mom, Rezz, Space Jesus’ music pushes the boundaries of Bass music to new and weird places. Those still going strong from 3-4 got lost in the sauce with our shaggy friend. He played many of his own originals with just a few random remixes thrown in. Each track made you want to headbang and get lost staring into the trippy, visual-auditory soundscape he created.

NEW YEAR, NEW DECADE! DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS

Based on the lineup for New Year’s Eve, I thought this day would be a bit softer than the previous day. But let me tell you, these artists weren’t messing around with their final sets of the decade.

I See Colors & GG Magree

I See Colors was the first artist of Day 2, starting us off with some classic House music. Although a short yet sweet set while doors were opening, his mixes were fun and upbeat, setting a positive tone to start the night on. GG Magree was second and I feel bad for anyone who wasn’t there yet. Her set? Pure fire. Aside from being an amazing DJ, GG had probably the best stage presence out of anyone at OMFG. She wasn’t afraid to grab the mic to hype up the crowd and sing along with all of us. And she felt much more connected with the crowd by busting out some A1 dance moves as well. She put some filthy drops on some of the 90’s and 2000’s best punk and alternative tracks. It felt like she was paying homage to the past as we looked toward the future. It may have been one of the heaviest sets of the night, but almost every set after had more Bass than I anticipated.

Good Times Ahead & DROELOE

Good Times Ahead brought out the club spirit in everyone. This Miami Duo knows how to get a crowd dancing, and they did it perfectly tonight. Like many of the other DJ’s they played a blend of their own tracks with many club favorites like “Get Busy” amongst others. They debuted a new track as well though they didn’t tell us anything about it. The crowd ate it up and soon it was on to the next. Keeping the duo magic going was Dutch artists DROELOE. Their set didn’t really fit neatly into any one category, blending styles to create a dynamic Deep-Bass experience infused with engrossing visuals that encompassed all your attention. Weaving in and out of spooky low bass and transcendent highs their set kept everyone locked in.

Countdown to 2020: Kayzo

Ringing in the New Year at OMFG NYE was Kayzo. His set was one of the fastest and most aggressive of the night. A lot of what he was playing was borderline Hardstyle, with extremely fast beats, and heavy drops. The music stopped for us to do the countdown in the final moments of 2019 and then as the year switched and everyone was getting their NYE lovin’ on, Kayzo kept the energy alive with more electrifying tracks.

Cash Cash & Said The Sky

Cash Cash followed by Said the Sky were the next two artists to play. Both sets had way more Bass than I expected considering the genres and styles from both artists. Maybe they were vibing off the other artists or maybe they just wanted to go especially hard for New Years. Whatever the reason, it was excellent. They took many of the songs you would expect them to play but slapped enough Bass on there to make you wonder what changed.

Last but not least: VIRTUAL SELF

The final artist of the night was Virtual Self. For those who don’t know, Virtual Self is a project by Porter Robinson that he’s been playing under for the past 2-3 years. For his set, the crew brought out his signature glass floor stage setup with dozens of lights underneath the glass. This added essentially another dimension to the already impressive light show. Lights were coming from every direction—above and below with lights and outward with lasers. Not only that, Virtual Self is another artist who takes pride in creating a set that is uniquely his own. Those familiar with his shows know he can be rather poetic, adding in written poetry to the visuals. He practically makes the crowd ponder about their own existence in this crazy world. It was exactly what you’d expect from a Virtual Self set, and I wouldn’t ask for it any other way.

The decade is over, but electronic music lives on.

OMFG! NYE was an amazing way to kickstart the new year, surrounded by good people and great music. What more could you ask for? As we all begin the new year and a new festival season, I know I will be keeping OMFG in the back of my mind next December!

Happy New Year and welcome to the Roaring 20s! Thanks to Cityfox Odyssey, we spent the turn of the decade raving, napping, raving again, napping again, and you guessed it… raving some more. The 27-hour tech-house event was truly an odyssey where thousands of ravers endured the test of time to make it to a legendary closing Âme B2B Dixon set.

The event kicked off at 9pm at the iconic Avant Gardner in Brooklyn, New York. We tried to conserve energy by starting our evening just as the clock turned to midnight with Sasha and John Digweed kicking off the new year. The duo played a whopping 4 hour extended set, which allowed us to dance for a few hours and then take some time to explore the other stages.

There were 4 stages throughout the main floor of the venue and a surprise 5th stage was added to a more intimate room up on the second floor. The Portal, or the main stage, was a sprawling warehouse with 3 bars, a VIP area, and production focused on an incredible laser show. The main stage had a nice blend of techno and house centered artists like Hot Since 82 and Jamie Jones.

Just next to The Portal was the Vortex. The Vortex was a circular, tented room with a massive sparkling disco ball placed right in the center of the tent. The overall lighting was darker and the tempo was more relaxed than the mainstage, giving it a deep, dark, disco circus vibe. Matthew Dekay threw down with YokOo to close the Vortex.

The third stage, titled The Bridge, had a unique setup with lights and chains extending from the ceiling to create a cube around the DJ booth. We were thankful that there were some padded benches in The Bridge so we could snuggle up and rest our feet while catching the sounds of Damian Lazarus.

Though all the stages were completely unique and impressive in their own way, The Void was our favorite by far. Cityfox was able to partner with art collective 404.zero to create an immersive exhibition that exceeded our expectations. Huge hollow metal squares hang from the ceiling in a line to create a tunnel. Light technicians used lasers and spotlights to create fluid visuals that never repeated. Our favorite set of the entire event was laid down by Ida Engberg at the Void. The visuals combined with seamless transitions between house and techno beats were unmatched.

In addition to the production and tunes, we were impressed by the overall flow of the event. We know New York City sometimes gets a bad rap for a moody crowd, but the vibes couldn’t have been more welcoming. There was lots of seating for those who needed a rest from the marathon, though we were disappointed when security wouldn’t let us disco nap at the venue. We ended up making a quick trip back to a friend’s apartment so we could nap and make it through the closing. The event was so long that they also had multiple food menus, complete with brunch options and special drink meals. Can you say mimosas?

All in all, the Cityfox Odyssey NYE was a success in our eyes. There’s no better way to bring in the new year than by dancing under sparkling lights to world class music with world class friends.

Decadence Arizona: Your New Year’s Bizarre https://festivals.digitalsnazz.com/decadence-arizona-your-new-years-bizarre/ https://festivals.digitalsnazz.com/decadence-arizona-your-new-years-bizarre/#respond Fri, 20 Dec 2019 22:23:00 +0000 https://festivalcoast.com/decadence-arizona-your-new-years-bizarre/ Photos by Hoku Haram

Haven’t quite figured out your New Year’s Eve plans yet? With the night that this planet enters a new decade just two weeks away, it’s getting to be that time to solidify travel plans and purchase your festival tickets!

If you are still on the fence regarding your chosen way to ring in 2020, let us present to you Decadence—Arizona’s largest New Year extravaganza. This December 30th and 31st, we’re lucky enough to ring in 2020 with a musical itinerary boasting Illenium, Skrillex, Fisher, G Jones, Griztronics and more! Hosted by Relentless Beats and Global Dance, expect unforgettable production and lights, impeccable organization and an all-around loving atmosphere.

Not sold yet? Here are 3 main reasons why you should consider Decadence Arizona for your special night this year:

1. Winter is the best time to visit the desert.

Sick of the cold weather and/or snow? Any interest in spending some time in the mountains after your New Year’s fun?

Decadence is located in Chandler, Arizona and not a long drive from a variety of extraordinary hiking and world-renowned adventures. The possibilities are limitless.

We’re looking at a historical average of 66- and 40-degree highs and lows for this time of the year in the area. You know what that means: less limitations in fashion, AND you don’t need to freeze on your way to your ride-share or vehicle. If you’re the adventurous type, stay a few extra days and explore the surrounding areas.

2. The tunes will take you on a journey.

Two nights of performances across three stages will entice your senses this year, hosting sub-genres of EDM including, but not limited to, house, dubstep, riddim and techno. We recommend taking a deeper look into every artist on the lineup as they are all heavy-hitters in our book, but if you are in more of a rush or would like to get a good overview, check out this playlist brought to you by Arizona’s promotion powerhouse, Relentless Beats.

3. The 2019/ 2020 run is about to be better than ever before.

Every year, this festival seems to get even shinier than the year before. The lights seem to get brighter, the visuals even more hypnotizing, and the lineup even more hard to resist. New for the 2019 run is the Weird and Wonderful interactive experience, which boasts the addition of roaming performers to the event. We’re excited to see how this incorporation of local performance art and talent will play out during its first debut in less than two weeks!

“Guests can expect an immersive and interactive experience, including dancers, circus performers, wild characters, and visual play around every corner.  Weird & Wonderful will not only make each Relentless Beats event extra special for attendees, but it will also be an important and positive impact on the community. This concept will give opportunities to people within the festival family to share their talents and passion, and inspire everyone around to express themselves.” –Bri Lueder (Creative Director of Weird & Wonderful)

She belongs to the Drumcode Label alongside other female powerhouse DJs like Amelie Lens, Charlotte De Witte, and Nicole Moudaber. Engberg is also married to fellow Drumcode artist Adam Beyer, can you say tech-house power couple?

Sasha & John Digweed

Name a more iconic DJ duo than Sasha and John Digweed, we’ll wait. Sasha and John Digweed are both British producers who have been creating music together since the early 90s. Separately, they are both widely recognized for their DJ/producer skills. But together, they really shine through as a progressive house powerhouse pair.

Stephan Bodzin (live)

Stephan Bodzin is a German techno producer and owner of record label Herzblut Recordings. Bodzin is a self-proclaimed “melody man” who has combined a background in classical music with a love for nocturnal club sounds to create his own unique sound. Bodzin is known for storytelling through his live performances, and he just recently won best Electronic Live Performer at the DJ Awards in Ibiza.

OMFG NYE: A New Year’s Getaway https://festivals.digitalsnazz.com/omfg-nye-a-new-years-getaway/ https://festivals.digitalsnazz.com/omfg-nye-a-new-years-getaway/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2019 21:43:00 +0000 https://festivalcoast.com/omfg-nye-a-new-years-getaway/ Photos via LED Presents | Written by Mark Apuzzo

Mind blowing as it seems, 2020 is just around the corner and we all know what that means—New Years Eve. The mention of this night creates such a flurry of thoughts and emotions in people. Some are eager to end this year and start over, a fresh year with a fresh slate. Others look towards it with worry and concern, fearful of what the future may bring. But, for us tried and true music lovers, we know that New Year’s Eve is a gold mine for amazing shows and festivals. The treasure trove did not disappoint this year with the prospect that OMFG! NYE provides us with. So here’s why you should be packing your bags for OMFG in San Diego this December 30th and 31st and head to one of the best new year’s festivals around:

Who couldn’t say no to sunny San Diego?

Coming up with your end of the year plans can be a major hassle. You have to decide between so many options: What do we want to do? Where should we go? One of the best places you could spend your New Year’s is in the beautiful, balmy city of San Diego. You could spend your days and nights bundled up tight. Or you could be relaxing on one of the many beaches San Diego has to offer. Plus the weather at a relaxing 67 degrees during the winter? This works out perfectly with OMFG! which is set up later at night from 9pm to 4am. You can spend your whole day and evening exploring what the city has to offer. Then you can return to your hotel or airbnb and have plenty of time to get ready before the show.

Speaking of the show, LED Presents has put together a lineup for this year that will make your jaw hit the floor.

Bass and House lovers will be ecstatic to see headliners on Day 1. There’s everyone’s favorite deep, dark Space Mom Rezz coupled with one of the OG’s of weird, space bass Space Jesus. The “space” theme doesn’t persist through the whole night, but the other stellar acts of the night include a “Good Faith” DJ set from Madeon and the Gud Vibrations from the dynamic duo, SLANDER. The other acts for the 30th include Drezo, Anna Lunoe, and Peekaboo

And since the holidays are the season of giving, this OMFG! just keeps on giving for Day 2.

The lineup for the 31st is just as amazing as the first day. House music, in all its different facets will be present this night. From the Pop House stylings of Cash Cash to the heavy Bass House of GG Magree, edm fans are sure to get their fill throughout this jam-packed night. Other acts include Droeloe, OMFG! veteran Said the Sky, and Good Times Ahead aka GTA. All these amazing acts have made their name in the scene for many years. Any one of these artists could ring in my new year, and I would be over the moon for the midnight countdown artist to be Kayzo or Virtual Self. But let that sink in for a second. You could spend your New Year’s Eve at some Aunt’s house drinking wine, or you could start your 2020 immersed in the captivating virtual audio world created by these incredible artists!

Plus, you can never go wrong with indoor shows during the winter.

This world will be created inside the Pechanga Arena located in the Midway district, just west of Ocean Beach. This state-of-the-art arena is equipped to fully melt your brain in all the best ways. Pechanga has been around for 50 years and has been voted as one of the best arenas in the States, so if you’re gonna go to an indoor show, this is the spot you want to be at. Arena’s tend to have the capacity to produce some of the most impressive and immersive visual displays you can get. Lighting designers are able to work with the whole room not just a single, flat stage so they are able to do things you never usually get at outdoor venues. Aside from enough lasers and lights to appeal to even the most intense visual cravings, their top end sound system will be sure to blow your socks off, no matter how cool they are. There’s not a bad seat in the house, and what better way to start a new year than surrounded by 15,000 amazing people all dancing their hearts out to some of the best music the electronic scene has to offer.

You can’t go wrong making OMFG! NYE your 2020 New Year’s Eve plans this year.

The location is to die for, the lineup is insane, and the venue is one of the best around. What more could you ask for? So grab your friends, lovers, or just your bag and dancing shoes and make this New Year’s Eve an unforgettable one. You can buy tickets here and check out this playlist to get yourself pumped for the party. See you there!
